For January 15th I'm going back 38 years to 1983 and Sunderland's top flight encounter at Roker Park with reigning European Champions Aston Villa.
Amazingly (in my opinion), the attendance for this game was only 16,052 despite it being played on a Saturday. Football was at a fairly low ebb at that time in part due to hooliganism I suppose. Villa's side was largely the one which beat Bayern Munich in the European Cup Final the previous May (Spink, Mortimer, Withe, Cowans, Morley et al) but they succumbed 2-0 to Sunderland. A notable appearance was that of (Super) Ally McCoist who came on for Sunderland for Frank Worthington late in the second half.
CRB Match No. 222
