1985/01/26 - Orient 0 Southampton 2 - FA Cup 4th Round

For January 26th I'm going back 36 years to 1985 and an FA Cup 4th Round tie between Orient and Southampton. Yes that's right York fans, I didn't go to the legendary York City game against Arsenal on the same day because I was living in the South and wasn't able to get a ticket. A packed out Brisbane Road (attendance 17,622) was the next best place to be in terms of possible giant killings!
Leyton Orient (as they are currently known) played under the non-location specific "Orient" from 1966 until 1987 with that name thought to originate from Orient Steam Navigation Company although I prefer the theory that it's because they are based in the "far east" of London.
A strong Southampton side (who finished the season in 5th place in the top flight which would have given them a UEFA Cup place but for the Heysel disaster), under Lawrie McMenemy, won 2-0 with goals from Joe Jordan and Steve Moran. Third Division Orient, managed by Frank Clarke, were relegated at the end of the season by a single point. I spent the afternoon with a small transistor radio pressed to my ear willing York to win their own FA Cup tie.
