1986/02/15 - York City 1 Liverpool 1 - FA Cup 5th Round

For February 15th I'm going back 35 years to York City's FA Cup 5th Round tie against Liverpool.
This was the third of 4 FA Cup 5th Round ties between York and Liverpool in 2 consecutive years (1985 and 86). York's passage to another 5th Round tie against Liverpool was relatively easy with victories against Morecambe (away), Whitby Town, Wycombe Wanderers and Altrincham.
York, under Denis Smith, were in one of their few golden eras and had been promoted to League Division 3 two seasons prior to this as runaway Champions of Division 4. Liverpool, now under Kenny Dalglish, were en route to a League and Cup double. Goalless at half time and on a frozen pitch, York took the lead through Gary Ford after an hour but were pegged back by a Jan Molby penalty for Liverpool following a debatable handball from Steve Senior within 5 minutes of City's goal. The game finished 1-1 and so it was back to Anfield for the Replay. There is still a lingering sense of injustice from that Replay as York had, what appeared to be, a perfectly good goal ruled out from Keith Walwyn which would have won the game for York in normal time. As it was, the referee thought better and Liverpool overcame York 3-1 in extra time. Both Alan Hansen and Mark Lawrenson said later that it was never a free kick in a million years and that the referee was on their side that night!
