1993/02/14 - Tottenham Hotspur 3 Wimbledon 2 - FA Cup 5th Round

For February 14th I'm going back 28 years to 1993 and Tottenham's FA Cup 5th Round tie against Wimbledon.

Spurs had this game won before halftime having taken a 3 goal lead and then proceeded to almost throw it away in the second half finishing with a final score of 3-2. Spurs had beaten Marlow and Norwich City to reach this stage whereas the Dons had overcome both Everton and Aston Villa after replays and penalties in the case of Villa. Wimbledon's side that day was more than useful and included Hans Segers, Vinnie Jones, John Scales. Robbie Earle and John Fashanu. The Dons by now were an established top flight side having been promoted in 1986 and they were to remain in Division 1 for 14 seasons until 2000 when they were finally relegated after a disastrous season under Egil Olsen. Within a little over a year of relegation Wimbledon had announced their intention to relocate to Milton Keynes, a move which was sanctioned by the FA for the first and only example of franchising in English professional football. The possibility of similar franchising moves were subsequently outlawed by the FA!
