For January 25th I'm going back 24 years to 1997 and my one and only visit to the Brewery Field, Spennymoor to see United take on Boston United in the Northern Premier League.
Spennymoor United no longer exist. They were dissolved in 2005 amidst unfulfilled fixtures and a new club had to start again the following season at the bottom of the football pyramid structure (in this case, Northern League Division 2, the 10th level) albeit that they assumed the stadium of the former United club and the place of Evenwood Town who were also using the Brewery Field! Complicated? You bet! Since those dark days Spennymoor Town have risen back through the ranks to the present day when they are to be found in National League North (the 6th level).
This game finished Spennymoor 1 Boston United 3. Spennymoor had ex-Newcastle United man Wes Saunders, infamous for being light fingered in the dressing room according to rumour. Boston United included Chris Withe, the younger and less accomplished brother of Peter.
CRB Match No. 1088
