For January 28th I'm going back 14 years to 2007 and another "Jolly Boys" outing with KD as part of a Christmas present from our better halves. This time it was a weekend trip to Barcelona and a chance to visit Camp Nou to watch FC Barcelona play Celta de Vigo.
Barcelona is a lovely city to visit even if you're not going to watch football but the chance to see Ronaldinho, Puyol, Xavi, Iniesta et al was the cherry on the cake for me. The day before the match we visited the FCB Museum at the stadium and also had a chance to wander around the Olympic Stadium, home of the 1992 summer games. Another touristic high spot was a trip to Gaudi's gothic/modernist masterpiece the Sagrada Familia, a cathedral which has been under construction since 1882 and is not yet complete (2026 is the latest projected completion date but I'd suspect Covid19 will delay that).
The match? It finished FC Barcelona 3 Celta de Vigo 1 with goals from Saviola, Ronaldinho (pen) and Giuly. La Liga that season could hardly have been more dramatic. Real Madrid and Barcelona finished level at the top on points and Barcelona had a far superior goal difference (+45 versus +26) but La Liga is determined by the head to head results between the 2 clubs which made Real the Champions. Celta de Vigo were relegated only returning to La Liga in 2012 where they have remained ever since.
