For January 24th I'm going back 12 years to 2009 and a visit to Paradise to see everyone's favourite Scottish side Celtic.
Tickets for Celtic Park were kindly sourced by Phil Simpson and I travelled up to Glasgow with brother-in-law (at the time!) KD as part of one our legendary "Jolly Boys" post Christmas football trips.
Celtic, manager Gordon Strachan, included Artur Boruc, Aiden McGeady, local boys Shunsuke Nakamara and Georgios Samaras as well as the superbly named Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink (how many people do you know with an "of" in their surname?) in his line up. against Hibs under the management of Mixu Patelainen. The attendance was 58,930 - I've never before or since been in a stadium that was entirely green and white! It finished 3-1 to the Bhoys (Celtic’s Gaelic-spelt nickname dates back to the foundation of the club formed by Brother Walfrid in an attempt to improve living conditions for those in Glasgow’s East End, primarily an area where the large Irish Catholic population lived). Post-match refreshments were sought late into the night in Glasgow. Oh and Rangers eventually won the title that season....
