For January 27th I'm going back 3 years to 2018 and an FA Cup 4th Round tie between Newport County and Spurs.
I was fortunate to be able to get hold of a ticket for this game thanks to my pal Les who has supported Newport his entire life poor chap. I remember the day well as it was one of those occasions when we managed to squeeze in 2 games on the same day. My appetiser on this occasion was my one and only Welsh League game. I counted an attendance of only 26 and this included several ground hoppers also taking the opportunity of a second game in the day. Newport City and Tredegar Town played out a 2-2 draw at the Newport Stadium (known locally as Spytty Park) which was actually County's former home until they decamped to the town centre. County are now tenants at Rodney Parade. Their landlord is the Welsh Rugby Union and the stadium is shared with Newport Gwent Dragons and Newport RFC rugby teams so you can imagine that the state of the pitch leaves something to be desired!
Newport, under the management of local boy Michael Flynn, have developed a fearsome giant killing reputation in recent years, and this tie was a real potential banana skin for Spurs. Newport had knocked out Championship side Leeds United in the previous round and came close to doing the same thing to Spurs. Padraig Amond scored for County after 38 minutes and it took until the 82nd minute for Harry Kane to poke home an equaliser from a corner in front of 9,836. Newport made it all the way to Wembley however because Spurs were using Wembley Stadium as their temporary home and made no mistake at the second time of asking winning 2-0.
