2008/08/16 - Racing Club Warwick 6 Cadbury Athletic 2 - FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round

Today I'm going back 13 years to 2008 and Racing Club Warwick's FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie against Cadbury Athletic at Townsend Meadow, Warwick played in front of a packed crowd of 78.

Only the crumbliest, flakiest of defences played like Cadbury Athletic that day. The game was effectively over by half-time with a fairly modest Warwick side managed by Bobby Hancocks (RIP) already three goals to the good and it finished 6-2 with Warwick's goals scored by Jason Ramsey (2), Terry Carpenter (2), Tom Leaver plus a Cadbury own-goal. With the game long since over, in the crowd we were obliged to make our own amusement and we had a heap of chocolate-covered fun!

I'll give you a few examples of the high quality comedy fare on offer on that August afternoon. It was All Gold (oh no, that's not Cadbury's is it?). We heard a Wispa that the Cadbury's team coach was, disappointingly, not a Double Decker. They must have come in a Taxi! We concluded that Cadbury needed a Boost and that they should have played on the Breakaway. Either that or they should have requested a Timeout and gone home but perhaps it was Twirl-y for that? Anyway, that's what you get for paying the players in Buttons. Warwick certainly performed like Heroes and weren't afraid to put in a few Crunchie-ing tackles as well as carrying an Aero-ial threat all all afternoon. The football was certainly out of this Galaxy! OK. Who is that Snicker-ing there at the back?

Sadly Racing Club fell at the next hurdle, going out 0-2 at home to Stourport Swifts in the Preliminary Round. We searched and searched for terrible puns involving Swifts or indeed any small English birds that day but we were never going to match the joy of a tie against Cadbury. Surely it was a Matchmaker made in heaven?
