1993/09/11 - Sheffield United 2 Tottenham Hotspur 2 - Premier League

Today I'm going back 28 years to 1993 and Tottenham's visit to Bramall Lane in the Premier League.

In front of an attendance of 21,325, Spurs took the lead via Teddy Sheringham after just 15 minutes and held the lead through to half time. Early in the second half the Blades got an equaliser scored by Adrian Littlejohn but were soon behind once again when Sheringham grabbed his second in the 51st minute. Shortly afterwards United had to replace their keeper Alan Kelly with substitute Goalie Simon Tracey due to injury. The Blades were not to be denied a share of the spoils however and that man Littlejohn got his second goal of the game after 62 minutes to complete the scoring. Littlejohn was to score only 3 League goals in 19 appearances that season so no doubt he will remember the spurs game fondly!

1993/4 proved to be a poor season for Tottenham and they ended the season in 15th place and finished only three points clear of relegated Sheffield United in 20th place (out of 22 teams). Oldham Athletic and Swindon Town were the other sides relegated that season. Manchester United won the title that season. Spurs had started the season under the management of Osvaldo Ardiles who had stepped into the managerial hot seat following the controversial dismissal of Terry Venables by Chairman Alan Sugar. Spurs under Ardiles were exciting but rather chaotic in defence and he didn't last beyond the early weeks of the following season during which time the FA had decided to punish the club for financial irregularities committed during the late 1980s. The punishment included a 1-year ban from the FA Cup, a £600,000 fine and a 12 point deduction. The punishment was later amended to a £1.5million fine and 6 point deduction and the FA Cup ban and points deduction were later quashed.
