Today I'm going back 34 years to 1988 and Tottenham's FA Cup 3rd Round visit to Boundary Park, Oldham to play "The Latics" or Oldham Athletic if you prefer. I'm actually sat writing this in the departure lounge at Edmonton International Airport waiting for my flight to Calgary before joining another flight to London Gatwick. As my connection in Calgary is tight I am praying that there won't be a last minute hitch but the airport seems to be extremely quiet so I'm not expecting problems.
In the featured match, played in front of 17,432 on one of those new fangled 1980's plastic pitches, Terry Venables' Spurs side had the lead after just seven minutes from their first attack of the game. The ball was chipped over the Oldham keeper from 25 yards by Clive Allen for an exquisite opener. Allen was executioner for Tottenham's second goal too, finishing a fine move and cross from Chris Waddle. The next goal was always going to be crucial and it went to Oldham and Tommy Wright who headed home despite protestations from the Tottenham defenders who were (I think) looking for offside. Just before halftime Spurs restored their two goal advantage from a corner given away cheaply by Latics defender Andy Linighan. Tottenham's fourth came from a well rehearsed corner routine too with Chris Waddle smashing home to win the game. There was time for Oldham to pull another goal back to make the final score 2-4 but Oldham were well beaten.
The game had gone according to status with top-flight Tottenham beating second tier Oldham Athletic. Sadly the wheels were about to fall off of the Spurs bandwagon with Tottenham losing away at Vale Park, home of Port Vale, in the next Round.
CRB Match No. 540
