1989/10/28 - York City 2 Doncaster Rovers 1 - League Division 4

Today I'm going back 34 years to 1989 and York City's Fourth Division fixture against Doncaster Rovers played at York's former home: Bootham Crescent. The game was played in front of a crowd numbering 2,978 which must be one of the lowest attendances for a fixture between these two Yorkshire rivals.

Rovers boss Billy Bremner had taken up the managerial hot seat at Belle Vue for his second spell in charge in the summer (his first spell had ended in 1985 when Leeds United came calling but he was to last just short of three years at Elland Road before returning to Doncaster).

York ended the season comfortably mid-table in 13th place seven points short of the final Play-Off place. Rovers finished further down the table in 20th position (of 24) but well clear of last placed Colchester United who were relegated out of the Football League to be replaced by Darlington returning after one year in the Non-League wilderness. Fourth Division champions that season were Exeter City and also promoted were Grimsby Town and Southend United with Cambridge United taking the fourth promotion place via the Play-Offs.
