For February 18th I'm going back 9 years to 2012 and Colwyn Bay's National League North game against Nuneaton Town. My first and only visit to Llanelian Road.
The Seagulls, as they are known were a rebellious club that refused to join the Welsh FA's new pyramid structure. Their decision was rewarded by promotion twice in the 2 seasons prior to to this one but their spectacular success was not to last. By 2016 they had been relegated back 2 levels and in 2019 they took the difficult decision to finally quit the English league structure and join the Welsh version. The Bay. another nickname, now ply their trade in Cymru North at the second level of the Welsh structure.
Nuneaton had troubles of their own. The old Nuneaton Borough club had been liquidated in 2008 following severe financial irregularities and a new club, Nuneaton Town, was formed, starting 2 levels lower than the old Borough club at step 4 of the non-league. By the time of this game, the Boro, as they were nicknamed despite being Town, had restored Nuneaton to the second level of non-league football. Interestingly, in 2018 the old Borough name was resurrected and the name Nuneaton Town was consigned to history!
This game finished Colwyn Bay 1 Nuneaton Town 6 and was one of those rare occasions where a player scored 4 goals. Take a bow Danny Glover. Former Chelsea star, Frank Sinclair, was playing for Colwyn Bay. Ironically there was more to come post-match. It was discovered that, due to an administrative error, Town had fielded an illegible player in this and another game and, as a result, had all 6 points won in those games deducted. It was the first time that I've seen a side win a league game and get no points for that win!
CRB Match No. 1876
