2019/02/05 - York City 1 Hereford 2 - National League North

For February 5th I'm going back 2 years to 2019 and York City's National League North game against Hereford FC. The eagle-eyed pedants amongst you may have spotted the error in the opponent's name, Hereford United were wound up in 2014 and a new phoenix club Hereford FC were formed shortly thereafter. City were not playing United!
This is a game I will always look back on with a sense of sadness. Not only did City lose 1-2 under the midweek floodlights but this game proved to be Daniel Parslow's last ever professional game. During the match he incurred a fairly innocuous-looking head injury and was substituted. Only the injury wasn't innocuous. Parslow struggled for months afterwards with a traumatic brain injury, the consequences of the concussion and was eventually forced to retire. He now acts as a spokesman for the charity Headway and is a passionate advocate for temporary concussion substitutes to enable the proper assessment of head injuries before a player is allowed to continue. Daniel spent almost his entire career in the service of York City and, with 383 appearances, ranks 10th in the all-time City appearance list.
This was an eminently forgettable season for York who finished below half way in 12th place in the National League North table (Hereford finished 17th). Steve Watson, the former Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Everton, West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday player, was appointed as City's new manager less than 4 weeks before this game and, somewhat surprisingly perhaps in the modern game, he remains as Manager still. The jury remains out regarding Watson amongst City fans and he will need to deliver promotion this season if he is to be regarded as a success. Covid19 permitting naturally!

CRB Match No. 2282
