1987/02/08 - Arsenal 0 Tottenham Hotspur 1 - League Cup Semi-Final 1st Leg

This was a season of so-near-and-yet-so-far for Spurs who mounted a serious challenge for all three domestic honours but ended up empty handed. Tottenham finished 3rd in the League (but fell away dramatically towards the end as the fixtures piled up), suffered a shock defeat in the FA Cup Final against Coventry City and, perhaps most gallingly of all, lost to their most hated rivals at the Semi-Final stage of the League Cup.
It all started so well with the 1st Leg of the Semi-Final being played at Highbury in front of 41,306 and Spurs taking the advantage back to White Hart Lane with a 1-0 away victory thanks to yet another goal from Clive Allen who was having a record breaking season in front of goal, a season that ended in him scoring 49 goals in all competitions. Allen ended the season playing as a lone striker in an, at the time, innovative 4-5-1 formation with Ossie Ardiles, cousin Paul Allen, Chris Waddle, Glenn Hoddle and Nico Claesen / Tony Galvin packing the midfield.
Sadly, despite taking the lead in the 2nd Leg (Allen scoring again), Arsenal scored twice late on to force extra time and a Replay. In the Replay Spurs took the lead again (guess who scored) but Ian Allinson and David "Rocky" Rocastle broke Spurs hearts to take their team to Wembley. Worse was to follow as they went on to win the Final against Liverpool. I don't think I've ever felt greater disappointment at a football match and I may have had something in my eye at the end!
