For March 8th I'm going back 35 years to Tottenham's top flight home game against West Bromwich Albion.
This one is memorable to me because I thought I would be watching a former classmate from Deighton Gates Junior and Wetherby High Schools playing professional football that day. I've copied the back page of the programme too in order to show the name of the Baggies goal keeper Stuart Naylor (affectionately known as "Nobby" to all the kids at school). In all I managed to see Stuart play only 2 games in his long career which took in 543 league games and coincidentally was there in the crowd in 2019 when he was awarded his Baggies cap at West Bromwich Albion in recognition of his fine service to the club.
But Stuart didn't end up playing in this game with Tony Godden being preferred that day. Godden proceeded to let in five goals to do his case for the number one spot no good at all! Spurs raced into a four goal halftime lead thanks to efforts from Gary Mabbutt, an own goal from Derek Statham, Tony Galvin and Mark Falco. With the game already won, the second half was a more sedate affair with only one further goal being added courtesy of Chris Waddle. One minor mystery (at least for me) was the attendance that day: 10,841 for a Saturday home game must be one of the lowest ever seen at Spurs but I cannot recall why it was quite so low.
CRB Match No. 425
