Today I'm going back 7 years to 3rd August 2014 and another FC Edmonton match in the North American Soccer League (NASL), this time against the San Antonio Scorpions played in front of a crowd of 2,849 at Clarke Stadium, Edmonton.
The programme is another of those annoying newspaper style issues and, worse in my opinion, the edition covers more than one match too. For the programme collector such as myself, issues for multiple matches leave me with the little problem of where exactly to file the programme in my collection (I file them in ascending date order). However, larger issues, and this includes newspaper style issues in this instance, get filed out of sequence at the bottom of that season's pile anyway in order to make the stacking sensible. Ho hum! As Covid19 has taught me, I should simply be grateful that a programme was issued at all.
San Antonio Scorpions no longer exist. Based in Texas, USA, they operated on an unusual model where all profits generated would go towards a wheelchair accessible theme park and were formed as recently as 2010. The Scorpions were NASL Champions in 2014 before being dissolved in 2015 when their facilities were taken over by the City and the decision was made to field another team, San Antonio FC, in the United States Soccer League (USL) Championship in the hope of obtaining an expansion franchise for the top level MLS. USL is a second tier competition in the USA and there is no promotion or relegation with the MLS so San Antonio's expansion dreams remain just that for now.
The match itself? The Eddies took an early lead after 9 minutes with an opportunist goal from Horace James. Horace is a first name that is rather underused don't you think? This particular Horace is a Jamaican who currently plies his trade in New Zealand so you could say that he gets around! San Antonio equalised via a penalty after 23 minutes which was scored by Eric Hassli. The Eddies regained the lead on 69 minutes with a goal from that man Tomi Ameobi and the scoring was completed with the best goal of the game on 75 minutes with a delightful shot from distance by former Glentoran player Daryl Fordyce. 3-1 to the Eddies yay!
