Today I'm going back 26 years to 1995 and York City's visit to London Road, Peterborough for a League Division 2 (English League third tier) fixture. This was my fourth of five visits to London Road (now known as the Weston Homes Stadium) and the result is the heaviest defeat that I've ever witnessed following York.
Following York hasn't always been an easy thing to do. Pleasing on the eye? Not always. Enjoyable? Often not the case. But occasionally it has been maddeningly annoying and this was one of those occasions. This was, remember, just a little over a month after City's legendary win at Old Trafford against the mighty Manchester United and yet York had no answer to Peterborough's attacking threat as they crashed and burned on the wrong end of a 6-1 score line.
In front of an attendance of 4,605, Posh (search on Peterborough in my blog for an explanation) must have pleased their new Manager, former player Mick Halsall, with their ruthlessness. The scored six with goals from Gary Martindale (2), Dave Morrison (2), Lee Power (future Chairman of Swindon Town) and Paul Shaw.
1995/6 was something of a roller coaster ride for Peterborough. They started badly and this lead to a parting of the ways with manager John Still in October just before this fixture. A run of five wins in eight games took them to midtable by mid March with their fans daring to look up the table at the possibility of a Play-Off place before early season form kicked in again as they won only one of their final 12 League games to finish in 19th place, just one above York City thanks to better goal difference and just three points clear of the dreaded relegation positions.
