1990/11/27 - Sheffield United 0 Tottenham Hotspur 2 - League Cup 4th Round

Today I'm going back 31 years to 1990 and Tottenham's visit to Bramall Lane, Sheffield for a League Cup 4th Round tie against Sheffield United: "The Blades" nicknamed after the fine knives and cutlery produced in England's "Steel City". It could have been "The Spoons" mind you but the fans were having none of that!

Spurs scored first, courtesy of Paul Stewart following some fine work by substitute Paul Walsh in the build up. Tottenham's second goal, again a product of a Paul Walsh cross, was slotted home by Paul Gascoigne inside the six yard box. The game was won and Spurs went through to the Fifth Round (or Quarter-Finals as it seems to be known these days) to play Chelsea. A promising goalless draw at Stamford Bridge proved to be a false dawn as Spurs crashed 0-3 at home in the Replay.

There was some solace in a Cup that season however as Tottenham went on to win the FA Cup come the season's end. Of all of the so called "Big 6" clubs, Tottenham probably have the least cause to describe themselves as "Big", certainly as far as trophy winning is concerned. I am 58 years old and Spurs have never won the League in my lifetime, the last time being in 1961, more than 60 years ago. That 1991 FA Cup win in was Tottenham's last FA Cup win and that's now 30 years ago. The League Cup provided Tottenham with their last domestic trophy and that was in 2008, now over 13 years ago. You'd hardly need sunglasses to look into the Spurs trophy cabinet would you? A duster would be more in order. Yet Spurs now do possess a Stadium that must rank alongside the best club stadia in the world and they did reach the Champions League Final, probably the most important club game in the world, in 2019 so, who knows, maybe they are finally on the verge of greatness and "Glory Glory Days". In Conte we trust. Please?
