Today I'm going back seven years to 2014 and York City's long-distance trek to Plymouth for their League game against Plymouth Argyle at Home Park in League 2 (the 4th tier of English football).
For the majority of football fans in England, a trip to Plymouth Argyle represents a visit to one of football's outposts. I always felt a sense of achievement when taking in a match at Home Park because it was simply so far from home. The same feeling for me could be obtained from visits to Carlisle United, Torquay United and Exeter City but, of course, it does rather depend on where you live (a trip to Carlisle is nothing if you live in Carlisle!). The same goes for visits North of the Border for me as it's such a long way and tends to require an overnight stay unless you want to spend the whole day in transit.
Plymouth had won the previous six home games and looked to have won this one too when Argyle took the lead after just three minutes, their goal being scored by Bobby Reid whose shot deflected off Femi Ilesanmi and over on-loan City keeper Alex Cisak. The game did have two goals however and those arriving late and leaving early would have missed them both. In the fourth minute of added time at the end of the match York's Jake Hyde reacted quickest to a Diego de Girolamo header which had been saved by the Plymouth keeper. 1-1 and it felt like a win. Perfect for the long journey home for the travelling City fans.
2014/15 was a moderate one for York, finishing as they did in 18th position but well clear of the relegation places under new manager Russ Wilcox following Nigel Worthington's early season resignation. I say moderate but what wouldn't we give to see York City struggling in League 2 right now instead of being two divisions lower in the English football pyramid? Plymouth made it into the Play-Offs reaching the 7th and last Play-Off spot but were beaten by 4th placed Wycombe Wanderers in the {lay-Off Semi-Final.
