Today I'm going back 37 years to 1985 and York City's FA Cup 3rd Round tie against Walsall.
Incidentally, today is the first anniversary of the launch of my blog. I began it a year ago as yet another lockdown threatened to drive me bonkers and I looked for a new project aimed at keeping me entertained as well as sane. Along the way I've posted my (more or less) daily Facebook postings containing reminiscences as well as a few carefully researched facts aimed at learning something new about matches that I attended. In all I've managed 335 postings during the course of the past 12 months and, more importantly, I don't think that I did go barmy in the end (no comments please). One or two of you have marvelled at my amazing memory although, I confess to having to refresh my memory along the way with a combination of Youtube, Wikipedia and my own personal records (and there's a ton of those!).Anyway, the good news as far as I am concerned is that a number of you have admitted to enjoying my ramblings and making me feel like I'm doing something fun that's also worthwhile. Thank you so much for taking the time to read my articles on Facebook or indeed in my blog and maybe you even took a look at the odd video attached to many of my blog postings to enjoy those highlights just one more time? Anyway, with a year under my belt, I'm going to carry on posting with maybe one or two new ideas. For example, as I have around 5,000 programmes from games that I didn't attend, I may well include a few of those in future. Amazingly I've also gained a few former York City players as Facebook friends and I may well include the odd memorable game from their own playing career together with associated reminiscences. If you know any former players who might like to participate in that, please send me a message, The only precondition is that I want to include the programme from a game in which they appeared on the anniversary of the day in question. It could be fascinating folks!
Today's featured game is probably remembered more for where the victory led than for the game itself. Having already disposed of Newcastle Blue Star and Hartlepool United, York were probably disappointed when drawing Walsall in the 3rd Round of the FA Cup rather than one of the so called big boys. However, if there was any disappointment, that would soon be dispelled by an extraordinary run to the 5th Round. Walsall were dispatched 3-0 and, to everyone at the club's delight, City's reward was a home tie against Arsenal in the 4th Round. York's giant killing feat in beating Arsenal is one unlikely to ever be forgotten and their 5th Round tie against Liverpool is another that will linger in the memory of those that were there. Oh for more of that!
