Today I'm going back 18 years 2004 and Racing Club Warwick's end of season Midland Football Alliance (MFA) fixture against visitors Cradley Town. The match was played out in front of an enthralled attendance of just 88. The stay-aways didn't know what they were missing!
One or two of my regular readers have complained previously about the programme cover used by Warwick for all editions of their programme for season 2003/04. No, your eyes aren't going funny, it really was like that! I tend to be more concerned that the programme cover carries no details of the opposition or the date of the game which leaves me having to flick through such editions every time I'm looking for a particular item but then most smaller non-league clubs do the same so I can't complain too loudly about Warwick's effort. As I always tend to say at this point, at least they had a programme!
Marcus Law's Warwick side actually conceded the first goal of the game to Lee Booth who scored for Cradley after just three minutes. The deficit didn't last for long however with Andy Lovelock grabbing an equaliser just a minute later. Warwick went on to rattle in another three goals before half time through Tom Cudworth, Andy Lovelock again and Richard Wade to lead 4-1 at the break. Substitute Paul White grabbed Warwick's fifth after 68 minutes and Cradley's Lee Booth ended the scoring by pulling a goal back for Cradley in the 75th minute.
In their first season in the MFA, Racing Club Warwick finished the season in 12th position. That might not sound like much of an achievement but actually represented a top half finish for the first time since 1994/95 with Warwick having finished plumb bottom of the Southern League Division One West the season before. For their own part, Cradley Town finished 22nd (out of 24) missing the relegation spots by one place. Pelsall Villa and Stafford Town were the relegated clubs. Champions of the MFA were Rocester with Willenhall Town also being promoted into the Northern Premier League Division One.
